Countering Social Media Misinformation

Our fact checkers remained vigilant in tackling misinformation circulating online. From viral political claims to misleading photos and deepfake videos, we worked to ensure the truth reached the public. With Uganda approaching an election period, we saw increased misinformation in the political space.

Quarterly Report on Misinformation Report (Jan-March 2025)

 

In the first quarter of 2025, Debunk Media Initiative actively monitored and verified misleading content across text, video, and audio formats—uncovering recurring misinformation patterns across Uganda’s digital platforms.

The most dominant themes were political misinformation, health-related hoaxes, and social issues, with WhatsApp remaining the leading source of false claims, followed by Facebook, X (Twitter), and TikTok. Our fact-checks addressed everything from viral conspiracy videos to misleading headlines and AI-altered images.

This report reflects our ongoing commitment to fighting falsehoods with timely, evidence-based verification, ensuring the public has access to accurate, reliable information

Building Strong Collaborations

Debunk is strengthening ties with the University of California Berkeley through Big Ideas, the Mastercard Foundation, the UC Berkeley Cyber Clinic, and the Human Rights Center. We’re also partnering with Jamil Forum, Africa Check, Makerere University, and the Media Challenge Initiative to advance credible media in Uganda—especially crucial as global fact-checking funding declines.

We joined media, academia and civil society stakeholders for the Kampala Geopolitics Conference that discussed the African Dimensions in International Debates
