Debunk Media Initiative Hosts Successful Online Training for Freelance Fact-Checkers

In an era where misinformation spreads faster than the truth, building a robust fact-checking ecosystem is not just essential, it’s urgent. At Debunk, we recognize that freelance fact-checkers are a vital force in this mission. That’s why we recently hosted a three day online training program tailored specifically for freelance contributors joining our network.
Structured around practical, hands-on learning, the training brought together participants from across Uganda and beyond, equipping them with the skills, tools, and editorial mindset required to identify, verify, and clearly communicate accurate information in the digital space.

A Practical and People-Centered Approach
The training ran for two hours each day over three days, with each session focusing on a core area:
-
Day 1 introduced the foundations of fact-checking and the broader misinformation landscape. Participants explored the psychology of disinformation, the responsibilities of a fact-checker, and Debunk’s internal workflow.
-
Day 2 dived into verification tools and techniques, where trainees worked through real-time demos on verifying images, videos, and social media claims. Practical tasks were assigned to encourage independent verification using open-source tools.

Beyond the Training: Building a Stronger Network
Participants walked away not only with new skills but with an understanding of what it means to be part of a fact-checking community grounded in integrity and impact. As we head into the election period in Uganda, it is vital to have a trained team of fact checkers to debunk and fact check content that will be published.
