FALSE: Nyombi Thembo Has Not Been in Qatar as Claimed

Background:
In late February and early March 2026, the Middle East was engulfed in a wave of Iranian missile and drone attacks targeting Gulf states housing US military assets, including Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Kuwait, and Jordan. The attacks followed the onset of hostilities between the United States, Israel, and Iran on February 28, 2026, and triggered significant international concern, flight disruptions, and evacuation advisories across the region.
It is against this backdrop of genuine regional conflict that a TikTok video posted by the account @serious..black on March 4, 2026, began circulating, claiming that UCC Executive Director Nyombi Thembo was in Qatar when a missile struck near the hotel he was staying in and that he was “in tears” as a result.
The post had attracted 240 likes, 26 comments, and 17 shares at the time of our review.
Because the claim attaches a specific Ugandan public official to a real and ongoing conflict in a way that could cause public alarm, we investigated whether Nyombi Thembo was in Qatar during the missile attacks and whether the image used in the video supports the claim.

Claim:
A TikTok video posted by @serious..black on March 4, 2026, claims that UCC Executive Director Nyombi Thembo was in Qatar when a missile hit near the hotel he was residing in, and that he was left “in tears” by the incident.
Findings:
Our investigation shows this claim is FALSE. While Iranian missile attacks on Qatar are real and documented, there is no verified evidence that Nyombi Thembo was in Qatar during the attacks, and the photograph used in the video is from an entirely unrelated event in Uganda.
The Iranian Missile Attacks on Qatar Are Real:
Following the onset of hostilities between the United States and Iran on February 28, 2026, there has been an ongoing threat of drone and missile attacks from Iran, with significant disruptions to commercial flights across the region, including Qatar. Qatar’s Interior Ministry confirmed that 66 missiles were fired at the country, with 114 reports of falling shrapnel and missile debris injuring 16 people. Qatar Airways suspended all scheduled flight operations due to the closure of Qatari airspace, operating only a limited revised schedule from March 18 to March 28, 2026.
These are verified and well-documented events reported by Al Jazeera, Qatar Airways, and multiple international media outlets. However, the existence of real missile attacks on Qatar does not validate the claim that Nyombi Thembo was present.
Debunk Info Verifier Tool Search Results
We used the Debunk Info Verifier to search for evidence supporting the claim. The tool returned a total of 11 results, two from social media and nine from web sources. Among the social media results was an X post by the account @goodhe4rted repeating the same claim that Nyombi Thembo was in Qatar when a missile struck near his hotel. However, the post provides no verifiable evidence, no travel records, no official statement, no credible media report, and no photograph from Qatar. The remaining nine web results were entirely unrelated to the claim. The absence of any credible web source confirming Thembo’s presence in Qatar is a strong indicator that the claim has no verified basis and originated and spread exclusively on social media.

No Verified Evidence Places Nyombi Thembo in Qatar
We searched for any verified reports confirming that Nyombi Thembo travelled to Qatar around the time of the missile attacks. No such report was found. On the contrary, Nyombi Thembo’s own verified social media accounts place him in Kampala on the same day the TikTok claim was posted.
On March 4, 2026, the same day the TikTok video was uploaded, Nyombi Thembo posted on his official X account (@UCC_ED) reflecting on an Iftar gathering he had attended in Ntinda, Kampala, where he met His Royal Highness Prince Kassim Nakibinge and Muslim community leaders.
He wrote: “Last week’s Iftar gathering in Ntinda prompted deep reflection on the harmony between faith, community, and the responsibilities of the digital age.” This post was made from Kampala and contains no indication of any international travel.
Additionally, on February 28, 2026, just four days before the TikTok was posted, he uploaded images and posted on his X/twitter account showing that he had been in Kampala that week, meeting US Ambassador H.E. William Popp alongside the Ministry of ICT and National Guidance, discussing Uganda’s digital transformation agenda. The post stated: “This week’s highlight was our engagement with U.S. Ambassador H.E. William Popp, marking a key step in strengthening digital and commercial connections between Uganda and the United States.”
Taken together, these two posts, one from February 28 and one from March 4, both placing Thembo in Kampala, directly contradict the claim that he was in Qatar during the Iranian missile attacks. A person cannot simultaneously attend an Iftar dinner in Ntinda and reside in a hotel in Qatar.
The Photograph Is From an Unrelated Event in Uganda:
A Google reverse image search of the photograph used in the TikTok video traced it to its source, a June 2025 article published by PML Daily, headlined “UCC ED to Staff: Internal Audit Is Catalyst for Change, Not Feared Foe.” The article documents Nyombi Thembo addressing UCC staff at an internal audit event in Kampala in June 2025, more than eight months before the TikTok was posted and with no connection to Qatar or any Middle East event. The Institute of Internal Auditors branding visible on the podium in the photo is consistent with this context. The image was therefore taken in Uganda in June 2025, at a routine professional engagement, and was repurposed to fabricate the appearance of a breaking news story about a missile attack in Qatar.

Methodology:
To verify this claim, we applied a structured fact-checking process combining the Debunk Info Verifier tool, credible media review, image verification, and account pattern review.
Debunk Info Verifier Tool
We used the Debunk Info Verifier to search for evidence supporting the claim. The tool returned 9 results, two from social media, including an X post by @goodhe4rted repeating the same unverified claim, and seven from web sources, none of which were connected to the claim. The absence of any credible web source is a strong indicator that the claim has no verified basis.
Official Social Media Review
We reviewed Nyombi Thembo’s official X account (@UCC_ED) and UCC’s official account. A post on March 4, 2026, the same day the TikTok was uploaded, placed Nyombi Thembo in Ntinda, Kampala, reflecting on an iftar gathering. A February 28, 2026, UCC post confirmed he was in Kampala that week, meeting the US ambassador. Both posts directly contradict the claim that he was in Qatar.
Image Verification
We conducted a Google reverse image search on the photograph used in the TikTok video and traced it to a June 2025 PML Daily article documenting Nyombi Thembo addressing UCC staff at an internal audit event in Kampala. The image was taken in Uganda in June 2025, more than eight months before the TikTok was posted, and has no connection to Qatar or any Middle Eastern event.
Verdict: False
The claim that UCC Executive Director Nyombi Thembo was in Qatar when a missile hit near his hotel is FALSE. While Iranian missile attacks on Qatar during late February and early March 2026 are real and well-documented, no verified evidence places Thembo in Qatar during the attacks. Credible reporting confirms he was in Kampala in the period surrounding the post, and the photograph used in the video is from an unrelated professional event in Uganda. The Debunk Info Verifier returned no credible web source supporting the claim — only another unverified social media post. Always verify claims — especially those involving public officials and conflict zones — against credible and official sources before sharing.
