MISLEADING: TikTok Video Misrepresents U.S. Embassy Message as Congratulating Uganda

Claim:
A TikTok video circulating online shows an individual stating in Luganda that the U.S. Embassy in Uganda released a statement congratulating Uganda after entering into a partnership.

The speaker says:
“U.S Embassy yakafulumya ekiwandiko nga econgratulatinga Uganda okubeela nga bakoze partnership.”
This translates to:
“The U.S. Embassy released a statement congratulating Uganda after forming a partnership.”
The video includes a screenshot of a post from the official U.S. Embassy Uganda Facebook page.
Findings:
- Info Verifier tool found no evidence of the U.S. congratulating Uganda as a country
Using the Info Verifier tool, we searched for any verified statements showing that the United States congratulated Uganda as a country following a partnership.

The Info Verifier tool returned no verified evidence confirming that the U.S. issued a congratulatory statement directed at Uganda as a sovereign state.
Instead, the available verified information confirms that the Embassy’s congratulatory message was directed specifically to the U.S. Exchange Alumni Network of Uganda.
This shows that the TikTok video misrepresents the target of the Embassy’s message.
2. The U.S. Embassy congratulated an alumni network, not Uganda
Using Google reverse search, we traced the text in the viral screenshot to the original post published on the verified U.S. Embassy Uganda Facebook page, where we reviewed the full statement in its original context.

“Congratulations to the U.S. Exchange Alumni Network of Uganda on your new partnership to spread the word on the impact Exchange Alumni are having in Uganda!”
This confirms that the Embassy congratulated the U.S. Exchange Alumni Network of Uganda, not Uganda as a country.
The alumni network is an independent association of Ugandans who participated in U.S. government exchange programmes such as Fulbright, IVLP, and YALI. It is not a government institution.
The partnership referenced was between the alumni network and Node Group, a communications firm.
3. The TikTok claim changes the meaning of the Embassy’s statement
By stating that the embassy congratulated Uganda, the TikTok video replaces the actual recipient, the alumni network, with Uganda as a country.
This alters the original meaning of the Embassy’s statement and creates the false impression that the congratulations were directed at Uganda as a state actor.
No official U.S. government communication supports this interpretation.
Methodology:
To verify this claim, we:
- Examined the TikTok video and translated the Luganda statement.
- Used the Info Verifier tool to search for verified evidence of any U.S. congratulatory statement directed at Uganda as a country.
- Used the Google reverse image search tool to locate and review the original U.S. Embassy Uganda post.
- Reviewed the original partnership announcement by the U.S. Exchange Alumni Network of Uganda.
- Compared the TikTok claim with the original embassy statement.
Verdict: Misleading
The U.S. Embassy in Uganda did not congratulate Uganda as a country. It congratulated the U.S. Exchange Alumni Network of Uganda on its partnership with Node Group. The. The TikTok video misrepresents this message by falsely implying that the congratulations were directed at Uganda as a nation.
