Out of Context and Misleading: Speaker Anita Among Is Not Responsible for Joe Biden’s Illness and the Late Pope Francis’ Death

What are the possibilities of someone being jinxed to the extent of transferring prostate cancer to another or causing one’s death by simply having a meeting with them? These are the claims we are debunking.

The Claim

On May 19th, 2025, a post was shared by Kampala Journal News (KJNews) on X claiming that Speaker Anita Among has something to do with former US President Joe Biden’s prostate cancer and the death of the late Pope Francis.

Context. 

Joe Biden is an American citizen and former US president, and during his tenure, his government in 2024 sanctioned Uganda’s Speaker, Among, and seven others over corruption and human rights violations. These sanctions were widely published here, here, here, here, and here. 

Joe Biden and Hon. Anita Among indeed met during the funeral of Pope Francis on April 26th, 2025.

It is also true that Among met Pope Francis eight times as she shared in her tribute message in parliament about the Pontiff as shared by the New Vision and the picture is of her visit in August 2023, as documented in multiple reports.

Evidence 

We conducted a Google search of the photos shared by KJNews. Among’s and Biden’s photos were taken at Pope Francis’ funeral on April 26th, 2025, as seen on various social media accounts here, here, here, here,  here, here and here. 

The other image of her with Pope Francis is from her 2023 visit to the Vatican, as reported here, here, here, here, here, and she also shared it on her X account. We find no connection between the two situations, one from 2023 and the 2025 passing of Pope Francis.

KJNews also claims Biden contracted a urinary complication “immediately” after meeting with Among. However, Biden was diagnosed with prostate cancer, a non-contagious disease common in elderly men like him (age 82).

Not that it is important to highlight this, because cancer and death are natural processes that aren’t considered contagious, but news of Biden’s diagnosis was reported here, here, here, here, here, and here. 

On cross-checking his X account, Biden also addressed his diagnosis, stating, “Cancer touches us all. Like so many of you, Jill and I have learned that we are strongest in the broken places. Thank you for lifting us up with love and support.”  He made no mention of Among or any infection linked to their meeting.

Research confirms prostate cancer is not contagious. According to the National Health Service (NHS), a health website in England, it is not clear what causes prostate cancer. 

“It’s not known exactly what causes prostate cancer, although several things can increase your risk of developing the condition,” reads the website.

The post also falsely claims Pope Francis died “immediately” after meeting with Among. The photo of their meeting is from August 2022, nearly two years before his death on May 21st, 2025.

Verdict

The claims are both out of context and misleading. Speaker Among is not responsible for Biden’s illness, and neither is she linked to the cause of the late Pope Francis’ death as claimed. 

The images used are of different events, namely, one with Biden is from Pope Francis’ funeral on May 26th, 2025, and the one with Pope Francis is from one of her Vatican visits in August 2022, nearly two years before his death.
