False: Joel Ssenyonyi Has Not Resigned From The Leader of Opposition Position
Claim
A TikTok video from the account BigiDaddyMcee LiveUGCA claims that Joel Ssenyonyi has resigned as Leader of the Opposition.
The claim, made in Luganda, a dialect in central Uganda alleges that Ssenynoyi wrote a resignation letter while questioning his intentions.
The video also includes a screenshot of an X post attributed to Gen. Muhoozi which garnered 17.8K likes, 449 comments, 1645 saves and 743 saves.
Background
Ssenyonyi was reappointed as the Leader of the Opposition (LoP) in Uganda’s 12th Parliament as reported here and here. He has held the position from January 2024, following his appointment by National Unity Platform (NUP), the largest opposition party in Parliament.
According to Section 6(b) of the Administration of Parliament Act, the LOP is chosen by the opposition party with the highest numerical strength in the House and currently, it is the National Unity Platform. That party selects one of its Members of Parliament for the role and formally communicates the decision to the Speaker. The LOP is then tasked with holding the government accountable, overseeing legislative agendas, and spearheading alternative policy approaches.
Gen. Muhoozi is the Chief of Defense Forces (CDF) of the Uganda People’s Defense Forces (UPDF), the highest ranking office in the Ugandan army. According to section 8(2) of the Uganda People’s Defence Force Act, the Commander-in-Chief appoints the CDF to be head of the Defence Forces, who shall be responsible for the command, control and administration of the Defence Forces.
While the role is central to national defence, it does not extend into Parliament. The office of the CDF has no constitutional mandate in legislative affairs and plays no role in appointing or removing the Leader of the Opposition.
Gen. Muhoozi is also associated with the PLU, a civic organisation that has recently been active in political mobilisation and from time to time, he appoints its leadership as reported here, here, here and here.
Recently, there has been political tension and public statements from Gen. Muhoozi and allies linked to the PLU, expressing interest in removing Ssenyonyi from the position as reported here, here and here. However, these statements remain political and do not constitute a formal or legal process resulting in his removal.
Evidence
To verify the claim, we began by conducting a keyword search using Debunk Media’s Info Verifier tool using words like “Has Joel Ssenyonyi resigned from his position as Leader of Opposition in parliament?” from the claim. The results indicated that he had not resigned. Further review of the results also revealed some links showing Gen. Muhoozi tried to have Ssenyonyi replaced as reported here, here, and here.
We then conducted media monitoring to find out if there are any media houses that have reported about the alleged resignation using words like “Joel Ssenyoyi resigns”, the search returned reports about his resignation from NTV in 2019 as reported here, here and here but no reports confirming his resignation as the Leader of Opposition in parliament.
Ssenyonyi Remains Leader of the Opposition
Recent parliamentary activity confirms Ssenyonyi is actively serving as LoP. On 10 August 2026, in his capacity as LoP, Ssenyonyi unveiled the Opposition’s legislative priorities for the 12th Parliament at a retreat in Entebbe, outlining plans on accountability, anti-corruption, and public oversight. Ten days later, on 20 August 2026. This confirms he was still actively exercising the duties of the office well after the TikTok claim circulated.
The video includes a screenshot of a tweet attributed to Gen. Muhoozi that says “I can appoint whomever. I just need Mzee’s approval. Ssenyonyi is at best an idiotic leader of the opposition”.
We did a simple Google search with the text in the post and found no matching results.
We then reviewed his official X account and found no post either. Using Grok (X’s built-in AI assistant), we found an indication that the post may have been deleted.
We did a Google reverse image search of the screenshot of the video to find the true context of the video and the results revealed that the clip is from an event where he formally handed over office at the end of his tenure as Leader Opposition in the 11th parliament waiting for the next appointment, a head of the appointment of a new LoP in the 12th parliament as reported here.
Subsequently, he was reappointed to the position. This means the clip is being used out of context and does not support the claim that he has resigned.
We also reviewed the account to find out if it was a credible account. The account’s bio reads as: “TV RADIO Personality,Producer,Editor,Content Creator,Song Writer,Artist 🇺🇬-🇨🇦 +256-750025835 For Businesses And Adverts” and as well as the content on the platform is misinformation.
Methodology
To verify the claim, we used a combination of digital verification and source analysis tools:
Info Verifier Tool:
We searched for the claim using keywords such as “Joel Ssenyonyi resigns as Leader of the Opposition”. The results showed he had not resigned.
Media Monitoring:
We reviewed coverage from credible Ugandan media houses to determine whether the resignation had been reported. This process found no verified reports confirming the claim, only coverage of political discussions and attempts to remove him.
Google Reverse Image Search:
We analysed screenshots of the clip used in the TikTok by running it through reverse image searches. This revealed that the footage of Ssenyonyi was taken from an earlier event at the end of his 11th Parliament tenure and is being used out of context.
Checked Gen. Muhoozi’s account:
We examined the alleged X post attributed to Gen. Muhoozi by searching the quoted text and reviewing his official account. We found no verifiable evidence of the post, suggesting it may be misleading or unverifiable.
Source Analysis:
We assessed the credibility of the TikTok account that shared the claim by reviewing its profile and content history. The account was found to share unverified and misleading content, raising concerns about its reliability.
Verdict: False
Ssenyonyi has not resigned from the Leader of Opposition position as claimed and therefore remains in the position. Kindly dismiss the claim.
