Misleading: Bobi Wine Did Not Say He Would Not Return to Uganda Until Museveni Steps Down

Claim
A tiktok video circulating online claims that National Unity Platform (NUP) leader Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, popularly known as Bobi Wine, said he would not return to Uganda until President Yoweri Museveni stepped down.
The video displays an alleged post from Bobi Wine’s verified X account stating:
“I am not going to come back to Uganda until H.E. Museveni, the voted president of Uganda, steps down. My contract is over. I am now an American, not a Ugandan.”
Brief Background
The claim was circulated in a TikTok video presenting the statement as a post from Bobi Wine’s verified X account. The alleged post concerns Bobi Wine’s absence from Uganda following the 2026 general elections and his position on returning to the country.
Findings
There is no evidence that Bobi Wine made the statement shown in the circulating video.
A search of Bobi Wine’s official X account did not identify the alleged post. His account is publicly listed under the handle @HEBobiwine and his recent posts do not show or talk about anything related to his return as the viral tiktok video claims.
The claim is also contradicted by Bobi Wine’s documented public statements about returning to Uganda. On 24 March 2026, during an interview with France 24, Bobi Wine said: “I intend to go back to my country; my fight is in Uganda. My work is in Uganda and my citizenship is in Uganda. I’m a Ugandan and I have to go back to my country.”
In April 2026, Bobi Wine again said, “My fight is in Uganda, and I will go back,” adding that the final stop of his journey would be Kampala, Uganda. Daily Monitor reported that the NUP was preparing for his return.
A similar claim has also previously been investigated by PesaCheck, which found that the alleged post announcing that Bobi Wine would not return to Uganda was fabricated.
The Debunk Info Verifier was also used to assess the claim. We queried the bot with: “Did Bobi Wine say that he is not coming back to Uganda until Museveni steps down?” The tool returned 23 sources and reported that Bobi Wine had made statements reflecting his position on not returning to Uganda while criticising President Museveni. However, it noted that while his statements suggested that the political situation was a barrier to his return, he did not explicitly say, “I will not return until Museveni steps down.” The results referenced reports from Jamiiforums and France24 concerning his position and return to Uganda.

Engagement:
The TikTok video had attracted significant engagement, with users reacting to the alleged statement as though it were genuine. The video showed 2,373 likes, 237 comments, 158 saves and 75 shares at the time the screenshot was captured.
The level of engagement shows how an apparently authentic social-media post attributed to a prominent political figure can quickly attract attention and shape public discussion, particularly when the claim concerns a politically sensitive issue such as Bobi Wine’s return to Uganda and President Museveni’s presidency.
Methodology
To verify the claim, we:
- Reviewed Bobi Wine’s official X account for the alleged statement.
- Searched for the exact wording of the alleged post across credible online sources.
- Reviewed independent media reports documenting Bobi Wine’s statements about his return to Uganda.
- Reviewed a previous PesaCheck fact-check concerning the same alleged post.
- Queried the Debunk Info Verifier with the question: “Did Bobi Wine say that he is not coming back to Uganda until Museveni steps down?”
- Compared the information returned by the verifier with primary and independent sources.
- Examined the circulating TikTok video and the engagement it generated.
Verdict
Misleading. Bobi Wine did not make the statement that he would not return to Uganda until President Museveni stepped down. The alleged X post is fabricated. His documented statements in March and April 2026 instead show him repeatedly saying that he intended to return to Uganda and that his political work remained in the country.
