FALSE: Swedish embassy has not closed its operations in Uganda
CLAIM
A TikTok video claims that Sweden is shifting its embassy from Uganda to Nairobi and that the Swedish Embassy is no longer operating in Uganda.
ENGAGEMENT
The TikTok video, posted approximately 18 hours before this fact-check, had received 223 likes, 65 comments, 272 saves and 191 shares at the time of review.
Several commenters appeared to believe the claim, with some expressing concern about its implications. One commenter questioned whether the Swedish embassy had indeed left Uganda, while another attributed the alleged closure to European countries struggling to finance their foreign missions.
This shows the claim was not only attracting engagement but was also generating discussion among viewers who appeared to accept the information as true.
FINDINGS:
To verify the claim, we first reviewed official communications from the Embassy of Sweden regarding its operations in Uganda.
We found an official announcement published in February 2026 explaining changes to Sweden’s migration services. The announcement stated that, effective March 2, 2026, migration-related inquiries concerning Ugandan nationals and residence permit holders would be handled by the Swedish Embassy in Nairobi.
However, the announcement did not state that the Embassy of Sweden in Kampala had closed or relocated. Instead, it clarified that interviews and biometric submissions would continue at the Embassy of Sweden in Kampala.
We also checked the embassy’s official website for information about its current location and operations. The website lists the Embassy of Sweden at 24 Lumumba Avenue, Nakasero, Kampala, alongside an active telephone number and official email address.
We also reviewed a news report published by The Kenya Times, which reported on the same reorganisation of immigration services. The report similarly indicated that the changes concerned migration services rather than the closure of Sweden’s diplomatic mission in Uganda.
To establish whether the embassy is currently operational, we further reviewed recent activity on the official Embassy of Sweden in Kampala X account. Recent posts published in August 2026 show continued operations, including the introduction of Anna-Maria Olsson as Sweden’s Ambassador-Designate to Uganda and the welcoming of new members to the Embassy of Sweden in Kampala team.
The evidence shows that the changes to migration services took effect months ago and did not involve the closure or relocation of the Swedish Embassy in Kampala. Recent activity from the embassy’s official channels further confirms that it remains operational.
This makes the TikTok video’s claim recycled and false, as it presents an old administrative change as though Sweden has recently stopped operating an embassy in Uganda.
METHODOLOGY
We analysed the claim using the Debunk Info Verifier and searched for official information regarding the reported changes to Sweden’s embassy and migration services in Uganda. We reviewed an official announcement from the Embassy of Sweden, checked the embassy’s official website for its listed location and contact details, and compared the information with a news report from The Kenya Times. We also reviewed recent posts from the embassy’s official X account to establish whether the mission is still active in Uganda.
VERDICT
FALSE. Sweden has not closed or shifted its embassy from Uganda to Nairobi. The changes announced earlier in 2026 only affected the handling of migration-related inquiries, while the Swedish Embassy in Kampala continues to operate.
