Out of context: Lubega Nsamba, President of the Mak Guild, and Col. Nakalema have not met about a career possibility, nor has he switched from NUP to NRM.

The Kampala Journal News’ (KJNews) X post claiming that current Makerere Guild President Lubega Nsamba met with the Head of the State House Investors’ Protection Unit (SHIPU), Col. Edith Nakalema, to cross from his party, National Unity Party (NUP) to the ruling party National Resistance Movement (NRM) after being promised an employment chance after graduation is incorrect. Their photo has been used out of context.

Unfortunately, the post garnered 103.7K views, 1.7K likes, 101 reposts, and 131 comments.

Evidence

As seen in the photo, both Nsamba and Col. Nakalema met, but for reasons other than those stated in the post.

As always, we downloaded the photo and did a simple Google Reverse Image search.

The data shows that the photo was first shared by the State House Investors’ Protection Unit (SHIPU) on their X account at 3:15 PM on Friday, January 31, 2025, as a live post alerting their followers about what was going on at their office that day.

The update mentioned that the Makerere Students’ Guild had visited Col. Nakalema led by their Guild president, Nsamba who discussed youth leadership and the use of artificial intelligence.

The next day, Saturday, February 1, 2025, the Makerere Students’ Guild posted additional information about the visit on its X account.

Although the visit was confirmed, the article included no mention of the Guild president receiving a job offer, as KJNews had alleged. The report went on to say that Col. Nakalema was invited  by the Guild President to the guild dinner slated for Saturday, 29 March 2025

Additionally, Col. Nakalema posted about the meeting that evening, confirming its existence and discussing ideas to transform entrepreneurship and young innovators, as well as the approaching Alumni Student’s Guild Dinner. In the post, she also tagged the vice chancellor of Makerere University, Prof. Nawangwe Barnabas.

Lucky for us, as a fact-checking organisation, there’s a growing rest of the public who care about facts and do come out to debunk these claims, as seen here and here

Was the meeting partisan?

Col. Nakalema responded and refuted the claim that the meeting was partisan.

Verdict

Out of context. The image and context that KJNews is painting are completely unrelated.

The discussion was not about Col. Nakalema offering Makerere University’s Guild President Nsamba a job after graduation. It wasn’t about partisanship, as others claimed. Disregard it and approach information from the KJNews platforms with caution until you’ve fact-checked it.
