False: Fake Post Falsely Claims Bobi Wine Won’t Return to Uganda

A TikTok post shared a screenshot of a purported X post attributed to opposition leader Bobi Wine claiming that he will not return to Uganda, has left politics, and has no issue with Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba as president.
The post reads:
“I will not be coming back to Uganda and I have no problem with @mkainerugaba standing as president of Uganda and from day I have left Ugandan politics everyone for himself now.”

The video also carries a Luganda caption reading “NUP bwetyo bwewedewo nga FDC,” which translates to “That’s how NUP has come to an end like FDC.” The caption suggests that Bobi Wine’s alleged departure signals the collapse of the National Unity Platform (NUP), similar to claims made about the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC).
The same screenshot was also shared on X by the account @AkelloJM with the caption:
“@HEBobiWine has said he won’t come back to Uganda. Where does this leave the NUP foot soldiers now?”
This post similarly portrays the alleged statement as genuine and suggests it has major political implications.

The post is being shared as proof that Bobi Wine has quit Ugandan politics and will not return to Uganda.
Findings:
Our findings show that the social media posts circulating online are based on a fabricated X post.
A review of Bobi Wine’s verified X account also found that he continues to actively post and comment on political developments in Uganda. His recent posts discuss the disappearance of Christopher “King Zale” Kamokya, the detention of political and civic actors, and the release on bail of Miria Matembe. This is inconsistent with the claim that he has abandoned Ugandan politics.

We also found no record of the alleged statement on his official X account. The screenshot also contains formatting and stylistic inconsistencies that differ from his genuine posts, further indicating that it is not authentic.
The alleged post exhibits several language inconsistencies. These include the awkward construction “from day I have left Ugandan politics everyone for him self now,” the incorrect spelling of “himself” as “him self,” and the absence of punctuation that would make the message coherent. Although grammatical errors alone are not evidence of fabrication, they are inconsistent with the writing style commonly seen on Bobi Wine’s verified social media accounts and therefore warrant additional scrutiny.
No credible media outlet has reported that Bobi Wine announced he would never return to Uganda or that he had endorsed Muhoozi Kainerugaba’s presidential ambitions.
We also used the Debunk Information Verifier to verify the claim and found no evidence of any announcement that Bobi Wine would permanently stay away from Uganda. Instead the tool stated:
“Bobi Wine has not announced that he will permanently refrain from returning to Uganda. Instead, he has stated that he will return, asserting it as his right, but has temporarily left the country due to security concerns…”

The verification response references earlier reporting that Bobi Wine temporarily left Uganda because of security concerns and intended to continue his political activities. The response also notes that no newer developments indicating a permanent departure have been reported.
Methodology
To verify the claim, we reviewed Bobi Wine’s verified X account to determine whether the alleged post had ever been published and to compare the screenshot with his genuine posts.
Additionally, we submitted relevant queries to the Debunk Information Verifier to search for any credible evidence or reporting supporting the claim. The information returned by the tool was then cross-checked against Bobi Wine’s official communications and reporting from reputable media outlets.
Verdict
False: The viral screenshot provides no verifiable evidence that Bobi Wine said he would not return to Uganda or that he had quit politics. Available evidence shows he continues to comment on Ugandan political issues, and no credible source has reported such an announcement. The claim appears to be based on a fabricated or manipulated screenshot.
