FALSE: Old 2018 Video Misrepresented as Bobi Wine’s 2026 Return

Background:
Since the disputed January 2026 Ugandan presidential election, content about opposition leader Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, popularly known as Bobi Wine, has circulated widely on social media platforms, particularly TikTok. Much of this content relates to his whereabouts and political activities following the election.
A TikTok video posted by the account @generalduties.media, captioned “Bobi Wine akomyewo mu Uganda” (translated from Luganda: “Bobi Wine has returned to Uganda”) went viral, attracting over 10,000 likes, 190 comments, and 1,472 shares. The video shows footage of Bobi Wine being surrounded by journalists and microphones, appearing to depict his return to the country.

Because the claim about Bobi Wine’s return to Uganda carries significant political implications and the video does not cite any verifiable source or date for the footage used, we examined whether the claim is accurate.
Claim:
A viral TikTok video posted by @generalduties.media contains a caption in Luganda stating:
“Bobi Wine akomyewo mu Uganda 🇺🇬”
This translates to: “Bobi Wine has returned to Uganda.”
The video uses footage of Bobi Wine surrounded by journalists and microphones, implying it was recorded upon a recent return to Uganda.
Findings:
Our investigation shows that the claim presented in the viral TikTok video is false. The video uses old, recycled footage and does not show Bobi Wine returning to Uganda in 2026.
Reverse Image Search Traces Footage to September 2018 — Not 2026
A Google reverse image search conducted on the TikTok video returned a YouTube video of the same event, uploaded on September 20, 2018. The footage shows Bobi Wine addressing the press at his home in Magere, Wakiso district, not at an airport or any location consistent with a 2026 return.
The context of the original 2018 footage is well-documented. Bobi Wine had travelled to the United States in early September 2018 to receive specialised medical treatment for injuries he allegedly sustained after being tortured by security operatives during and after the Arua Municipality by-election in August 2018. He was arrested and charged with treason on August 13, 2018, after security forces claimed protesters had stoned President Museveni’s convoy during campaign rallies. He was subsequently released on bail, and after an initial attempt to travel was blocked with him briefly re-arrested at Entebbe Airport. He was eventually allowed to board a KLM flight to Boston on September 1, 2018.
Debunk Info Verifier Confirms Bobi Wine Had Not Returned
We used the Debunk Info Verifier tool to search for verified information related to the claim. When queried with “Is Bobi Wine back to Uganda”, the tool returned the following response:
“As of now, Bobi Wine has not yet returned to Uganda. He is currently outside the country, following a temporary departure for international engagements. In a recent interview, he indicated his intention to return soon to continue advocating for democracy in Uganda. However, after spending nearly two months in hiding post-election, he has been seen in Washington, D.C., and has announced plans to intensify his political activities upon his return. There have been various rumours about his return, including misleading claims and doctored videos, but verified information suggests he has not yet made the trip back.”

Notably, the Debunk Info Verifier explicitly acknowledges that “there have been various rumours about his return, including misleading claims and doctored videos”, directly corroborating our finding that the viral TikTok video in question is part of a pattern of misinformation about Bobi Wine’s whereabouts.
Fact-checkers Have Also Debunked Similar Claims
The debunk info verifier also returned results from credible fact-checking organisations that have debunked similar claims including PesaCheck, a third-party fact-checking organisation partnered with Facebook and other social media platforms, that separately investigated a TikTok post making the same claim, that Bobi Wine had returned to Uganda in April 2026, and found it to be FALSE. PesaCheck’s investigation also identified recycled footage, including airport imagery of Bobi Wine and his wife from a 2024 return after a London performance, being misrepresented as recent.
Bobi Wine Was in New York — Not Uganda — at the Time of Posting
Primary source evidence directly from Bobi Wine’s own verified X (formerly Twitter) account (@HEBobiwine) confirms he was in New York City on May 4, 2026, the day after the TikTok video was uploaded on May 3, 2026.
On May 4, 2026, Bobi Wine posted the following on his verified X account:
“This evening at 5PM (Eastern Time), the Institute of African Studies at Columbia University in New York will be hosting us in a fireside chat with students, faculty and friends of freedom and democracy. Our conversation will focus on the status of the struggle for democracy in Uganda and other countries where it is at risk. Please join us! We’ll also stream the event live on TikTok via @he_bobiwine at 12AM Ugandan time (5PM ET).”
— @HEBobiwine on X, May 4, 2026
This post constitutes direct, primary source evidence that Bobi Wine was at Columbia University in New York City on the evening of May 4, 2026, less than 48 hours after the TikTok video was uploaded. It is therefore impossible for the footage in the viral video to depict a return to Uganda at or around the time of posting.
Bobi Wine Has Expressed Intent to Return — But Has Not Yet Done So
While Bobi Wine has publicly stated his intention to return to Uganda, there is no verified report confirming that he has actually done so as of the date of this fact-check. However, intent to return is not the same as having returned.
No Verified Media Coverage of an Actual Return
We found no verified report, credible media article, or official statement confirming that Bobi Wine returned to Uganda at or around the time the TikTok video was posted. Had a figure of his prominence actually returned to Uganda, particularly given the security concerns surrounding his situation, it would have been widely covered by credible Ugandan and international media.
Source & Context Verification:
The TikTok video posted by @generalduties.media provides no source, date, or location information for the footage used. The video:
Does not identify where or when the footage was filmed
Does not cite any news outlet, official statement, or eyewitness account
Presents old footage as if it depicts a recent event
Uses emotionally charged framing (the Uganda flag emoji, the word “akomyewo” meaning “has returned”) to suggest a confirmed current event
Without source attribution or verifiable footage, the claim cannot be independently confirmed and existing verified evidence directly contradicts it.
Methodology:
To fact-check and verify this claim, we applied a structured fact-checking process combining reverse image search, tool-assisted verification, primary source review, credible media analysis, and source attribution analysis.
Reverse Image Search
A Google reverse image search was conducted on the footage used in the viral TikTok video. The search returned a YouTube video of the same event, uploaded on September 20, 2018.
Tool-Assisted Verification
We used the Debunk Info Verifier tool to search for verified records related to the claim. When queried with “Is Bobi Wine back to Uganda”, the tool confirmed that Bobi Wine had not yet returned to Uganda, noting he had been seen in Washington, D.C., and that “there have been various rumours about his return, including misleading claims and doctored videos.” The tool also surfaced results from credible fact-checking organisations, including PesaCheck, which had separately investigated and debunked the same claim.
Primary Source Review
We reviewed Bobi Wine’s verified X account (@HEBobiwine) and found a post dated May 4, 2026, the day after the TikTok video was uploaded on May 3, 2026, placing him at Columbia University in New York City for a fireside chat hosted by the Institute of African Studies. This constitutes direct, primary source evidence from his own verified account, confirming he was not in Uganda at or around the time of posting.
Credible Media Review
We reviewed coverage of Bobi Wine’s movements from credible Ugandan and international media outlets. None reported that he had returned to Uganda during the period in question. All references to a return described it as an anticipated future event.
Source Attribution Analysis
We reviewed the viral TikTok video posted by @generalduties.media to determine whether it cited any verifiable source for the footage or the claim. The video provides no date, location, news report, or verifiable reference for the footage used, making independent verification impossible from within the post itself.
Verdict: FALSE
The claim that Bobi Wine has returned to Uganda, as presented in the viral TikTok video by @generalduties.media, is FALSE. The video uses recycled footage from September 2018 of Bobi Wine addressing the press at his home in Magere, Wakiso district, not footage of a recent return. At the time the video was posted, verified evidence confirms he was still in the United States.
