Misleading: Viral Video Falsely Links Museveni’s Remarks To Gongodyo’s Mob Killing

CLAIM:

A viral video claims that President Yoweri Museveni made the remarks heard in the clip in response to the mob killing of Ugandan rugby player Sydney Gongodyo, who was mistaken for a thief and beaten to death.

We found no evidence that President Yoweri Museveni made a public statement about Gongodyo’s death matching the remarks heard in the viral video.

A reverse image search traced the footage in the viral clip to a video published by New Vision on June 9, 2026. The footage shows President Museveni addressing veterans and discussing veterans’ welfare, compensation programmes, wealth creation initiatives, and government support schemes. A review of the speech transcript found no reference to Sydney Gongodyo, mob justice, or the remarks heard in the viral audio. This indicates that the visuals and audio do not originate from the same speech.

A review of the speech and its transcript found no reference to Sydney Gongodyo, rugby, mob justice, or the remarks heard in the viral audio. Instead, the President’s speech focused on veterans’ welfare, government programmes, agriculture, and economic empowerment.

We also compared the audio in the viral clip with the audio from the June 9 speech. The speech in the New Vision video is delivered at a noticeably slower pace than the audio heard in the viral clip. While differences in speech patterns alone cannot determine when a recording was made, they further suggest that the audio and video do not originate from the same event.

We also used the Debunk Information Verifier to search and verify the claim using the keywords “Museveni talks about Gongodyo’s death.”

The search returned news reports discussing the circumstances surrounding Gongodyo’s killing, calls for justice, and demands for a public trial of the suspects. However, none of the results contained evidence that President Museveni made the remarks featured in the viral video or that he publicly commented on Gongodyo’s death using the words attributed to him in the clip.

The absence of such evidence in reports covering the incident further supports the conclusion that the viral video falsely links the remarks to Gongodyo’s death.

The claim may have gained traction because it links a speech about mob justice to a high-profile and widely discussed killing. By associating unrelated remarks with Sydney Gongodyo’s death, the video creates a sensational narrative that is likely to attract attention and engagement on social media. However, Debunk Media found no evidence linking the speech to Gongodyo or the circumstances surrounding his death.

The use of unrelated footage and audio alongside a widely discussed and emotionally charged incident may have increased engagement with the video by leading viewers to believe that President Museveni was directly commenting on Gongodyo’s killing. However, Debunk Media found no evidence linking the speech to Gongodyo or the circumstances surrounding his death.

METHODOLOGY:

We reviewed the viral video and conducted a reverse image search to identify the source of the footage.

We then examined the original video and its transcript and compared the audio in the viral clip with the audio from the source footage, finding no evidence that the remarks heard in the viral video were part of the original speech.

We also used the Debunk Information Verifier to search for credible reports and public records related to the claim. The search yielded reports on Gongodyo’s death but found no evidence that President Museveni made the remarks attributed to him in the viral video in response to the incident.

VERDICT: Misleading.

There is no evidence that President Museveni made the remarks in response to Sydney Gongodyo’s death. The viral video uses footage from an unrelated event and pairs it with separate audio, creating the misleading impression that the President was commenting on the rugby player’s mob killing.
