FALSE: Trump Has Not Made Such Remarks About Christopher Onyum

Background

On April 2, 2026, Christopher Okello Onyum, a 39-year-old man, attacked children at the Ggaba Early Childhood Development Centre in Kampala, killing four toddlers aged between 15 months and two and a half years. He is alleged to have gained access to the daycare by posing as a parent. He confessed to the killings in a charge and caution statement, claiming he committed them as human sacrifices in a bid to acquire wealth. The attack triggered massive public outrage across Uganda, and his trial began in April 2026 in a mobile court set up at Ggaba Community Church grounds.

It is against this emotionally charged backdrop that a TikTok video began circulating, claiming that US President Donald Trump had intervened in the case, stating that Onyum would not be tried in Uganda and must be extradited to the United States immediately.

Because the claim involves a specific, high-stakes statement by a sitting US president about an ongoing criminal trial, we investigated whether Trump made any such statement.

Claim

A TikTok video claims that US President Donald Trump has said that Christopher Onyum will not be tried in Uganda and must be extradited to the United States immediately.

Findings

Our investigation shows this claim is FALSE. President Trump has made no such statement; the video is AI-generated, and Onyum’s trial is actively underway in Uganda with no extradition proceedings initiated.

Debunk Info Verifier Tool Search Results

We used the Debunk Info Verifier tool to search for the claim using the keywords: “US President Donald Trump has said that Christopher Onyum will not be tried in Uganda and must be extradited to the United States immediately.” The DebunkBot responded that there appears to be no verified information supporting Donald Trump’s claim about Christopher Onyum not being tried in Uganda and needing immediate extradition to the United States. It confirmed that recent coverage indicates Christopher Onyum is currently undergoing trial in Uganda for the alleged murder of four children, with court sessions being held near the crime scene in a mobile court format to allow public attendance, a new system being piloted by the Ugandan government. It further noted that Onyum reportedly holds dual citizenship in both the US and Uganda, adding a layer of complexity to any potential extradition issues, citing AP News and the South China Morning Post as its sources.

No Verified Evidence of Any Trump Statement on Onyum

We searched for any verified statement, press release, White House communication, or credible media report confirming that President Trump made any comment about Christopher Onyum’s case, his extradition, or his trial in Uganda. No such statement was found. NTV Uganda reported on April 13, 2026, that Onyum appeared in court at the Ggaba Community Church grounds in Kampala, with no mention of any US government intervention, extradition request, or statement from Trump. No US State Department communication, White House press briefing, or credible American, Ugandan, or international media outlet has reported any Trump statement on this case.

Onyum’s Trial Is Actively Proceeding in Uganda

Onyum, who holds both Ugandan and American citizenship, has appeared in court in Uganda to have charges formally put to him. Prosecutors stated the evidence will show he carefully planned the offence over several days, and a medical assessment confirmed he is mentally fit to stand trial. The trial is proceeding before Ugandan courts, and no extradition request from the United States has been reported by any credible source.

The Video Is AI-Generated with the Veo Watermark as the Giveaway

A key red flag in the TikTok video is the presence of the Veo logo at the bottom right corner of the screen. Veo is Google‘s advanced AI video generation model that creates high-quality, realistic videos from text descriptions. All videos generated with Veo carry a visible “Veo” watermark in the bottom right corner, in addition to an invisible SynthID watermark embedded in every frame, both designed to identify the content as AI-generated.

Google confirmed that all Veo 3 videos carry a small visible watermark appearing as pale white text in the lower right corner, a deliberate transparency measure introduced precisely because Veo-generated videos can be difficult to distinguish from real footage. The presence of this watermark on the TikTok video is therefore a direct and verifiable indicator that the video, including the news reporter, the NTV-branded background, and the breaking news claim, was artificially generated using Google’s Veo AI tool and was not a real news broadcast.

The NTV Branding Is Fabricated

The video uses the NTV Uganda logo as a backdrop to lend the AI-generated content the appearance of a legitimate news broadcast. NTV Uganda has not reported any Trump statement on the Onyum case. Using a real broadcaster’s branding in a fabricated AI-generated video is a deliberate manipulation tactic designed to lower viewers’ suspicion and make false claims appear credible.

Methodology

To verify this claim, we applied a structured fact-checking process to assess the credibility of the claim.
We conducted a keyword-based search using the Debunk Info Verifier tool to identify any existing verified reports or credible mentions of the claim. The tool aggregates information from reputable global and regional news sources, allowing for rapid cross-verification. Results indicated no verified evidence supporting the claim and instead pointed to ongoing judicial proceedings involving Christopher Onyum within Uganda.

We carried out independent cross-checking across credible media outlets and official communication channels. This included reviewing reports from established Ugandan media such as NTV Uganda, as well as searching for any statements from the White House, the US Department of State, and internationally recognized news agencies. No press releases, briefings, or verified media reports were found indicating that Donald Trump made any statement regarding Christopher Onyum or his alleged extradition.

We identified the Veo logo at the bottom right corner of the video and verified through Google DeepMind’s official documentation and credible technology reporting that Veo is Google’s AI video generation model, and that all Veo-generated videos carry a visible watermark in the lower right corner as an AI content disclosure measure. This watermark confirms the video is artificially generated, not a real news broadcast.

We reviewed NTV Uganda’s official reporting on the Onyum case and found no report of any Trump statement on extradition. The NTV branding in the video is fabricated and does not represent any actual NTV broadcast.

Verdict: False

Trump has not made any such remarks about Christopher Onyum. The claim is false, the video is AI-generated, confirmed by the Veo watermark visible at the bottom right corner, and Onyum’s trial is actively proceeding in Uganda. The video uses fabricated NTV branding to simulate a real news broadcast. Always verify breaking news claims, especially those involving world leaders and ongoing criminal trials, against credible and official sources before sharing.
